I consider that port development and strategy is done in 3 distinct timelines.

  1. The immediate moment – NOW!
  2. The short term – my tenure of 2 years
  3. The longer term – 10-25 years.

The NOW moment initiative is to trigger immediate changes which can make a difference now, namely before the end of this year 2021 by making possible changes in structure, reallocation of existing resources and replanning. Taking into consideration COVID restrictions and slowdowns as well as travel difficulties for talent access and capacity building.

The short term would be a period of 2 years, within which time the issue would be what additional equipment, purchases, hires, creation of address books, networks and marketing pipeline could be made to get the required development level within the next 2 years.

The long-term plan would be based on the initiation of projects which would cater for the needs of the port within the next 10 to 50 years, based on a port masterplan made to that effect.

What do you consider as your main challenges going forward?

The main one is simply time. There is a lot to do in very little time. For the rest, I hope anyone reading this can bear with me and keep an open mind. I am very confident that Mauritius and Port institutions have what it takes to get to where it needs to be. It is easy to focus on visible achievements, such as structures and purchases of physical products. The more important challenges, for me, remain capacity building, team building, leadership and coaching for a new generation of port management leaders and decision makers who can stand their ground in the face of adversity.

Would you consider any specific segment in which you consider you need to start with immediate focus?

Yes – I can think of 3 such segments:

  1. Marketing & Communication – The MPA and CHCL accomplish remarkable things. Unfortunately, much of what is done is not communicated and valued. Let’s change that. Let’s change the fact that most Mauritians may not even know how the port operates or what an incredible ecosystem lives in there. You will be invited to find out soon.
  2. Technology & Connectivity – it’s time to extend our connectivity and reach through digitalisation. Whether its personal connectivity or through technology ports are now incredible hubs of data transfer and trade. This transformation needs to happen.
  3. Human Resources – the best companies hire and retain the best talents. Outsourcing, ‘Upwork’ and other such options now provide incredible potential for finding incredible talent even in our small geographic space.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for your welcome. Game on.

I invite the private sector to join me in creating and sharing ideas for innovation for the port and all its services.
