The Mauritius Ports Authority in association with the Economic Development Board has the pleasure to welcome you on board on the consultation exercise for the shaping of the future landscape of the Ports. The first leg of the consultation exercise, focused on the bunkering sector will extend from 01 October 2021 to 30 November 2021.
Strategically located along the main shipping routes of the Indian Ocean, Government intends to transform Port-Louis Harbour as a major bunkering hub for maritime traffic in the region. The Government strategy is to position Mauritius as a bunkering hub in the region to reap the direct and indirect benefits of a larger vessel traffic to the country.
The bunkering sector is one of the fastest growing in the ocean economy segment in Mauritius with a 90% increase in volume during the past six years. Since 2014, bunker trade increased from 348,871 tonnes to reach 661,474 tonnes in 2019.
Vessels taking bunker from Port-Louis increased by 37% from 2017 to 2019. In 2019, 2470 vessels took bunker in Port-Louis compared to 1799 vessels in 2017. Re-exports of bunker and ship stores increased from MUR 9 billion in 2017 to 12.5 billion in 2019. The National target is to increase bunker throughput at Port Louis to 1.5 million MT by 2025.
