Senior Lecturer | Department of Biosciences and Ocean Studies | University of Mauritius (UOM)

In March 2021, Miss Deepeeka Kaullysing was elected as the country coordinator (Mauritius) for the Western Indian Ocean Early Career Scientists Network under WIOMSA. This network is an initiative to promote scientific research and to provide a platform for early career scientists to initiate research collaborations in the region.

Miss Kaullysing, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Science, University of Mauritius (UoM), holds a BSc (Hons) in Marine Science from the UoM and a Master’s degree in Marine Science from Goa University (India) under a Commonwealth Scholarship. She was later presented with the Mauritius Research Council Postgraduate Award to pursue a doctoral degree in the field of Marine Malacology, the study of marine molluscs.

The WIOMSA is a regional, non-profit, membership organization registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The prestigious organization works toward promoting the educational, scientific, and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences throughout the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region for the sustainable use of marine resources.

Miss Kaullysing is also a member of the Women in Marine Science (WiMS), a network under the WIOMSA which addresses the gender equality issues facing women scientists in the WIO region. As National Coordinator for the association, she has been actively encouraging research in the field of marine science, especially among budding scientists.

Miss Kaullysing has benefited from various competitive grants from the WIOMSA. In 2016 and 2018, she was awarded the Marine Research Grant (Travel grant – MARG III) by the WIOMSA to attend and present her research work in the field of marine science at international conferences in Hawaii (USA) and Oregon (USA), respectively. Dedicated to her research work, Miss Kaullysing delivered two peer-reviewed research publications based on her work following her attendance at the conferences.

I’ve got the chance (and still is) to collaborate with Miss Deepeeka, now Head of Department of the Faculty and very soon Doctor in the field of Marine Malacology. She is very intuitive and research focused with so many publications which helps a lot in the scientific world as well as in Governmental Management of our marine ecosystem.
It feels great to see that we are promoting such dedicated scientist with real aim to conserve our marine life through research.
