Hutchison Ports BEST is upping its game when it comes to the use of other renewables

One European terminal says it’s leading a green renewables revolution in the Med

Hutchison Ports BEST at the Port of Barcelona has signed an agreement with Endesa to contract 100% renewable energy.

The terminal said this will enable it to reduce its CO2 emissions by more than half (8,300 tonnes) setting a benchmark in its use of renewable energy.

“From 2022 onwards, 100% of BEST’s electricity will come from renewable sources. In this way, we are at the forefront of sustainability in the port sector, becoming the greenest container terminal in the Mediterranean,” said Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST.

Renewable focus

The terminal is also upping its game when it comes to the use of other renewables.

BEST’s next focus is to increase its use of solar by expanding the number of solar panels for self-consumption with a total surface area of 4,763 m2. Mr Belcastro said that this should reduce CO2 emissions by 250 tonnes.

The operator is also providing 40 charging points for electric vehicles to contribute to its energy transition.

BEST terminal, which is equipped with cranes powered mainly by electricity means, is the first semi-automated terminal in the Hutchison Ports Group.

Mr Belcastro said that the terminal’s sustainability plan offers an environmentally committed alternative to shipowners and end customers who are sensitive to the impact of their activity on the fight against climate change.

”BEST is committed to sustainability and the fight against climate change,” he said.

”For this reason, it [continually] researches and invests in sustainable technological innovation projects .. and in the search for fossil fuel alternatives used in different types of port equipment.”
